What do I need to do to use giropay?

In order to be able to use giropay to pay in an online store, all you need to do is to activate giropay under “giropay” in the menu of your Sparkasse’s online banking portal. To do so, you will first have to enter a giropay username and password and then confirm that you want to activate giropay with a TAN. In future, all you will have to do is to enter these login details to approve payments made with giropay. However, you can also approve giropay payments by entering your online banking login details, although doing so means you will miss out on buyer protection.

Alternatively, you can also register for giropay when paying for an online purchase. giropay will then send you an activation email for you to confirm.  Confirming the receipt of this email will automatically activate your giropay account and allow you to use it to make secure online payments and take advantage of its many benefits.

giropay can also be used to send and request money.  As soon as you have activated giropay on your Sparkassen App, you will be able to send and request money from your contacts simply by selecting the relevant contact, entering the amount, adding an optional message and you’re done.

No, sorry, that is unfortunately not possible. In that case, you will have to delete your old account and set up a new one once you have switched banks.

Will my account’s financial status page show all of the transactions conducted with the new giropay?

We are merging the old giropay, Kwitt and paydirekt. While the merger is under way, the financial status page on the online banking portal will continue to show only the transactions that you have conducted through your paydirekt account (username/password/biometrics) in the same way it does for paydirekt. At some point in the future, this page will also show the transactions conducted using your online banking login details and through giropay | Kwitt (Send Money).

Will I be able to see the giropay transactions on the buyer portal when I log in with my online banking login details?

No, at present, you will only be shown the payments that you have approved using your giropay username/password or with the App using biometric authentication.

How can I prove that I am of legal age?

You can verify your age with your giropay ID. This is a quick and secure means to demonstrate that you are of legal age without having to sign into another service.

What are the benefits of using giropay ID?

giropay ID is provided through your Sparkasse's secure online banking portal and can only be used to confirm your name and age by authorising this action with a TAN. This means that there will be no need to verify your age through a webcam or entering your passport details, which can be a complicated and lengthy process.

What is oneKlick?

oneKlick is a feature that allows you complete an online purchase with just a single click. Once you have set up oneKlick in an online store, you will no longer need to enter your username or password in future because giropay will then be automatically saved as your default payment option for all future purchases from this store. Payments made with oneKlick are as secure as normal giropay payments because you will still have to authorise the transaction with a PIN of your choice or through biometric authentication. You can also deactivate oneKlick again at any time in your giropay account. oneKlick can only be used with participating retailers.

Where is my giropay account and how do I log in?

Your giropay account is located at www.paydirekt.de. You can enter your giropay username and password by clicking on the login button in the top right corner. Clicking on login will then open the account page.

Questions about paying online

How can I pay with giropay Pay Online?

When you get to the checkout in an online store, simply select giropay as the payment option and enter your giropay username and password or your online banking login details. You will then need to confirm the payment to complete the purchase. On rare occasions, you may additionally be asked to authorise the payment by providing a TAN for security reasons.

How does the buyer protection work?

Every giropay payment that you have authorised using your giropay username and password provides you with buyer protection. If a retailer fails to deliver an order, you will be able to claim back your money within 30 days of the purchase through your giropay account at www.paydirekt.de. To do so, log into your account with your giropay username and password. Once you have logged into your account, select “Report problem”  > “Haven’t received order”. The customer service team will then immediately contact the retailer to resolve the problem. If the retailer is unable to demonstrate that they have dispatched the order, your payment will be instantly refunded and paid back into your current account.

In which online stores can I pay with giropay?

There are thousands of online stores that accept giropay, including the following well-known retailers:

Am I directly paying from my bank account when paying with giropay?

All giropay payments are always made directly from your bank account.

Can I also pay by credit card?

No. You can only use giropay/paydirekt to make payments directly from your current account in the same way as when paying with a Sparkassen-Card (debit card).

I am only able to pay by logging in with my online banking login details. Why is that?

giropay allows you to pay by providing your giropay username and password, with your paydirekt App or with your online banking login details and a TAN. However, some retailers do not yet offer all of these payment options.

Can I cancel a payment?

No. Just as with a transfer, it is not possible to cancel a payment once it has been made. However, you can always cancel the order in question but will have to contact the retailer directly to do so.

Can I use giropay to pay in foreign stores?

You can use giropay with all retailers that offer giropay as a payment option. Most of the retailers currently accepting giropay are located in Germany.

Does the new giropay have to be activated before I can use it for payments?

If you want to be able to pay using just your giropay username and password or the paydirekt App, or if you want buyer protection, you will have to activate the new giropay on your online banking portal. If you have already registered with paydirekt, your paydirekt login details will also apply to the new giropay. Alternatively, you can also authorise giropay payments by entering your online banking login details.

Does the buyer protection also apply to the “Pay through online banking” option?

The buyer protection only applies to payments made by providing your giropay username and password (the method previously used for paydirekt). Payments made by logging into online banking (the method previously used for giropay) does not qualify for buyer protection.

How does the “Pay through online banking” option work?

This option allows you to make a payment without having to sign into giropay. To do so, you will be automatically forwarded to online banking where you will be able to transfer money with giropay.

Why am I unable to pay with my online banking login details?

Your particular Sparkasse may not yet offer the option of paying with your online banking login details. It is also possible that system has not yet been upgraded to accepting payments authorised with online banking login details. However, we are in the process of making all of this possible.

Why do I have to log into my online banking in order to make a payment?

If you are not using your giropay username and password or the paydirekt App for making a payment, you will have to log into your online banking in order to make a giropay payment. Once logged in, you will be able to check the payment details again and, if required, authorise the payment by entering a TAN.

Why is the retailer not being shown as the recipient of the payment in the giropay transfer order?

When you “Pay through online banking”, the payment is made through a so-called settlement account. The payment will be automatically made to the final recipient from this settlement account.

Does giropay store my online banking login details?

No, your details are only stored by your Sparkasse.

Why have I not received a payment confirmation email?

There are no email confirmations for payments made through the online banking portal.

General FAQs on the payment system merger

To what effect are giropay and paydirekt being merged?

giropay is going to be even better than before and the new giropay will offer even more options for paying for goods and services online. It will also enable you to pay online at an even greater number of stores and retailers – that is, everywhere where the giropay logo or paydirekt logo is being shown. You can also activate your giropay account on the online banking portal. This gives you the added option of simply paying with your giropay username and password. Added to that, your purchases will also be protected by buyer protection.

Why are there two giropay logos (old and new)?

We are currently working on merging the former giropay, Kwitt and paydirekt systems and turn them into a single system in order to provide a highly effective single online payment system. The new system will also be called giropay but will have a different look. During the current transition phase, we are going to continue using the old logo for the old giropay because no actual changes are yet going to the be made to the payment process either. However, we are using a combined logo made up of the paydirekt and the new giropay logo for the former paydirekt payment system. At some stage in the future, all that will be left will be the new giropay system with the new logo.

Why do I not get buyer protection when paying with the new giropay through online banking?

The new giropay is a combination of the old giropay system and paydirekt. During the current transition phase, the different payment authorisation methods are still linked to different service offers. As a giropay customer, you will qualify for a number of benefits when you are authorising a payment with your giropay username and password, just as with paydirekt. These benefits include authorising payments with your fingerprint or facial recognition on the paydirekt App, use of the buyer portal on paydirekt.de and buyer protection. Registering for the new giropay or for paydirekt doesn't take any time at all and can be done in your online banking. Please note that you have to be over 18 to register for the new giropay or paydirekt.

Why am I unable to pay with my giropay username and password or the App with biometric authentication when using the new giropay system?

In order to be able to pay with your giropay username and password or to use biometric authentication, you will first have to register for the new giropay system in online banking. This won't take a minute and is easy to do. However, please note that you have to be over 18 in order to register for these services.

Why am I unable to pay with my giropay username and password or the App with biometric authentication when using the old giropay system?

If you are being the shown the old dark blue and red giropay logo, you will only be able to pay by entering your online banking login details. Service providers who are displaying the new dark and light blue giropay logo with the keyboard or a combination of the new giropay logo and paydirekt logo will also allow you to pay with your giropay username and password or to use biometric authentication. You can also pay with your giropay login details in all stores that are only showing the paydirekt logo.

Do I have to take any action to switch my Sparkassen App to the new giropay?

Yes. You will have to update your Sparkassen App in May 2021. Everything else will then be taken care of automatically.

What are the differences between the payment systems with the old and new giropay logo?

Both versions allow you to authorise online payments with your online banking login details and, where relevant, a TAN. Most of the retailers that feature the new giropay or paydirekt logo will also allow you to pay using your giropay username and password or with your paydirekt App and biometric authentication.

Questions for %(produkt.447.p_name) users

What has changed for paydirekt users?

As a paydirekt user, you will be able to start using the new giropay system straight away because you can continue to use your paydirekt username and password to authorise online payments. When you are using giropay in future, you will be able to choose from two payment authorisation options in your retailer's online store:

A) If you are paying as usual with your username and password, you will also receive buyer protection and a money-back guarantee as well as access to exclusive discounts and promotional offers.

B) Alternatively, you can also authorise giropay payments by entering your online banking login details. When opting to authorise payments this way, the payer protection ordinarily offered with paydirekt does not apply.

You can also use the new giropay to send and request money. You can now activate and use the giropay Send Money feature giropay | Kwitt in your Sparkassen App any time.

giropay will continue to be offered as a free service for use with your current account just like paydirekt and has the same high level of security and data protection as online banking.

Does the paydirekt buyer protection also apply to the new giropay?

Yes, the new giropay comes with full buyer protection and a money-back guarantee.

Why are some retailers still displaying the paydirekt logo if it has now been changed to giropay?

At the moment, we are still in a transition phase during which our different payment systems are gradually merged and during which retailers are still switching to the new logo.

I use the paydirekt App for paying online. Will I be able to continue doing that with giropay in future?

giropay allows you to pay by providing your username and password, with your paydirekt App or with your online banking login details and a TAN. However, some retailers do not yet offer all of these payment options.

Will I have to activate the new giropay even if I have already registered for paydirekt or Kwitt?

If you have already registered for paydirekt, you do not have to register again for giropay Pay Online. You will also be able to continue using your paydirekt login details for the new giropay. If you are already a registered Kwitt user, you will also be able to use giropay Send Money without having to register again. However, you will not yet be able to use your Kwitt login details to access both the Pay Online and Send Money features. We are still in the process of setting this up.

Questions for Kwitt users

What has changed for Kwitt users?

The Kwitt features for instantly sending money by phone will be incorporated into the new giropay. This feature can now be accessed under giropay | Kwitt in the menu on your Sparkassen App. What’s great about this: There is absolutely no change other that this. That means that you can continue to send and request money easily and quickly just as before. Not only that, but it gets better still: The new giropay will be offering an even greater range of features and options than before. As a result, you will no longer only be able to send money to friends and family from your phone, but also to pay securely online directly from your current account in thousands of online stores.

Why are paydirekt and Kwitt turned into giropay?

The online payment systems giropay and paydirekt and the Kwitt  money-sending feature will be merged and become giropay. This is why Kwitt will be shown as giropay Send Money from now on. Thanks to this merger, you can now also use giropay to pay online.

Why is giropay Send Money called “giropay | Kwitt” in the Sparkassen App?

During the transition phase, we want to make it easy for both active Kwitt users as well as new giropay users to find their way round the Sparkassen App. This is why we choose to use the name “giropay | Kwitt” for this feature during the transition phase.

Can I automatically use Pay Online and use Send Money if I have a giropay account?

We are really sorry, but during the paydirekt and Kwitt merger transition phase, you will still need to authorise these kinds of payments separately online. We are still in the process of setting this up. However, if you have already registered for paydirekt and/or Kwitt, you do not have to activate these features again and can continue to use your old login details.
